Here are some of my favourite musicals, why I like them, and my favourite songs from them.
Chicago
If you can't be famous...be infamous.
Chicago is also my favourite movie (just try to tell me that Catherine Zeta-Jones doesn't rock as Velma Kelly, c'mon!). It's a satire about Roxie Hart, a woman from the 50s, who has dreams of stardom - and achieves it when she shoots her lover (who, ahem, she is cheating on her husband with). I love it because it does dark humour brilliantly and the songs are so very good! My favourite character is Velma Kelly, because she's oh so evil!
My favourite songs? While you can't go past All That Jazz, I do love Roxie, and Cell Block Tango.
RENT
No day but today..
RENT is about a group of bohemians living in America in the '90s, dealing with issues like AIDS. It was one of the first broadway musicals to include bisexuality and racial diversity. It was based on the opera La Boheme. My favourite character is Mimi, a stripper with a drug addiction, poor love. And Angel, the cross-dressing musician (every time I watch the bit where he dies, I bawl my eyes out!). My least favourite is Maureen, 'cause she is kind of mental and makes Joanne feel bad. But everyone, of course, hates Benny. Traitorrr!
My favourite songs? I absolutely adore La Vie Boheme, a catchy song they sing to pretty much piss off the dudes in suits who are looking down on them. Another Day is such a beautiful song, and so is One Song Glory (a song sung by a character wanting to write one good song before he dies of AIDS, and also reflects on his girlfriend, who killed herself after finding out she had AIDS. It's sad, dude.).
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Let's do the time warp again...
Do I really need to explain this one? Rocky Horror is a cult classic, man! We all know we're secretly wishing people would say "Damnit" so we can say "Janet!" and then "I love you!". Come on! My favourite character? Haha, guess!
My favourite songs? Um, it's a little thing called the Time Warp! Plus, Science Fiction Double Feature (the Dresden Dolls do an excellent live cover of this, by the way. Amanda singing: In the back rowwww! Audience yelling: F*ck the back row! ..It's an inside joke, heh.). And Damnit Janet, heheeee.
The Sound of Music
These are a few of my favourite things...
I know, I am so lame. But c'mon! We all love this movie; how could you not? My favourite character is Maria.
My favourite songs? Do Re Mi, dude. Everyone knows it! And I am sixteen, going on seventeeeeen! And you can't forget So Long, Farewell!
